Diligently preparing to teach a Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning class, Cheryl Harmon had to relearn how to use PowerPoint. She also needed to print her presentation, but she doesn’t have a printer.
Fortunately, she has a go-to source for printing: the Madeline L. Olewine Memorial Library.
“That was very handy,” she says of having access to MOM’s publicly-available printers and computers. “The presentation was a good 20 pages.”
Harmon is a Susquehanna Township resident and career librarian trained at Drexel University who regularly borrows books and movie DVDs from MOM. She also serves on the McCormick & Olewine Library Friends, the joint friends group supporting Madeline L. Olewine Memorial Library and McCormick Riverfront Library.
“I want the staff to know that I am there to support them,” she said. “It’s not just things I do for myself to encourage them.”
What are you reading? I just finished a book that was like nothing I had seen before. “A Single Spy,” by William Christie. It was an espionage story set in World War II. The author is out of the University of Pennsylvania. It was so wonderful. You’re following a particular person who is a spy for both Russia and Germany. He’s very scrappy, and he’s very smart. It was wonderful to read.
What else do you like to read? Another genre I love is “black ops.” I love David Baldacci. I love following some of his characters. I’m also in love with M. J. Rose. Her work is splendid. There is some history involved. She writes about a family by the name of L’Etoile. It’s a perfume family. She writes about different skills that women in the family have over time. She follows several generations. Each of them is so involved and so detailed. Sometimes she goes back and forward in time, and sometimes not.
Why are you drawn to those books? I really do like character development. I will pick up DVDs for the same reason. Who is this person? What’s the story around this person? How does this person get involved in things? I get to know the individuals in the stories.
Why does The Library matter to you and the community? Anyone can go into a library and spend their time reading or searching. It’s such a valuable thing to know you don’t have to buy things yourself. You don’t have to buy all the books and the DVDs. You can check them out first. You can gather books from all the libraries in Dauphin County and outside The Library through Interlibrary Loan. There are so many possibilities if you want to keep up your learning.
