Susan Orlean

Fans readily know Susan Orlean as the writer of favorites, such as Rin Tin Tin and The Orchid Thief, which became an award-winning film. But perhaps less known is her passion for libraries and unbridled interest in exploring the diverse slice of humanity who use them.

Indeed, Orlean’s latest triumph – The Library Book – looks at the devastating impact the 1986 Los Angeles Public Library fire had on its community and explores the broader story of how libraries and librarians impact lives.

  • The Library is thrilled to announce that Susan Orlean – our Author of the Year – will bring her unique wit, charm and unmatched talent for historical storytelling to our community from 7 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 8 during a live, virtual presentation. Don’t miss this exclusive live-stream event that will not be recorded or rebroadcast. Click here to register for free and for more information.

Susan Orlean“We are excited to welcome Susan Orlean, whose latest book shows the positive force libraries are in the lives of so many,” said Karen Cullings, The Library’s executive director. “She is also the perfect person to help us highlight our expansion of the downtown McCormick Riverfront Library.’’

In 2019, The Library acquired the Haldeman Haly House, which is adjacent to McCormick Riverfront Library. It was the home of Sara Haldeman Haly, who in 1896 created what is now the Dauphin County Library System by donating $60,000 and the land for what is now McCormick Riverfront Library.

“Susan Orlean will help us kick off our ‘Your Place to Belong’ campaign and highlight how incorporating the Haldeman Haly House will allow The Library to expand our services,’’ Cullings said. “A dedicated children’s reading room, expanding adult education and computer access are just some of the enhanced services the project will make possible.’’
