In 1925, Dauphin County Library System’s pioneering librarian Alice Eaton established Pennsylvania’s first (it’s believed) bookmobile. The bright-red truck carried the joy of reading to rural schools and homes where farm mothers hosted summertime “library stations.”
Technology may have come a long way since vacuum-tube radios, but Dauphin County Library System has come full circle with MARCO, The Library’s Exploration Station. Like that eye-catching bookmobile, MARCO mobilizes to raise awareness of The Library’s services and strengthen connections between The Library and residents in every corner of the county.
MARCO has a busy schedule for National Library Week and looks forward to a summer full of fun and enrichment.
Since MARCO’s debut in 2017, the colorful van has become known for delivering learning, connections, fun, and bubbles.
National Library Week 2023, April 23 to2 9, uses the “There’s More to the Story” theme to spotlight libraries and everything they have to offer their communities, and MARCO is the perfect delivery vehicle for that message and those services. MARCO can provide a free Wi-Fi hotspot as well as access to 10 laptop computers that can be used for accessing The Library’s online resources, checking email or participating in a digital program provided by library staff.
Where’s MARCO during National Library Week?
There will be free books for readers of all ages, goodie bags with Library swag, and online Library card sign-ups. MARCO offers free Wi-Fi, access to laptops, and electronic-device charging. Kids, up to about age 99, love MARCO’s bubble machine.
Visit The Library during National Library Week, April 23-29, to explore all we have to offer.
Most people know about the wealth of stories available at The Library, from picture books and large print to eAudiobooks and eBooks. But there’s so much more to the story.
The Library is your place to belong – a welcoming space that brings communities together for entertainment, education, and connection through book clubs, storytimes, crafting classes, lectures, and more. The Library offers a wide array of informational resources, including several databases, genealogy resources, and access to tutor.com.
And libraries play a critical role in the economic vitality of communities by providing internet and technology access, literacy skills, and support for job seekers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs. The Library supports Dauphin County with services such as access to PA CareerLink, Weiss Financial Ratings, and our Grants Information Center.
