Jenn B. and her daughter, Sylvia, utilize The Library “like nobody’s business.”“We live down the street from Kline Library,” said Jenn, who asked that her last name be withheld due to the sensitivity of her work. “We can never leave The Library without getting a massive amount of books. I’m constantly signing up my daughter for different programming.”Jenn uses The Library for research and printing. Lately, Sylvia has enjoyed Paws 2 Read, The Library’s beloved program pairing children with trained dogs for private read-aloud sessions that build confidence and literacy.
Mother and daughter will make quilt squares for The Library’s Women’s History Month Quilt Square Program this March.
“We have participated in so many differ
ent library activities over the years,” Jenn said.
Are you a lifelong Library user? I grew up in the Harrisburg area. I remember going to the East Shore Area Library all the time. I always get one particular book, but I do not remember the name. I know it had a black cover, and I loved the pictures. My mom would say, “Really? You want this book again?”
Are there any Library moments with your daughter that stand out? Recently, it’s been during Paws 2 Read. She’s in first grade. She’s really starting to learn how to read. It’s nice for her to have that experience of reading to someone else, who’s not just me because Mom can get boring. We don’t have dogs. We have cats, but dogs are so much more patient, right?
What kinds of books does your daughter check out? All kinds of books. Unicorns are a big thing with her right now. Anything with cats and books about animals. She loves the history books. I think that’s also partially me because I enjoy history. We read a lot of nonfiction-ish books together. If she loves a book, she will tell me, ‘Mom, we need to get a copy of this.’ And oh, my goodness, she has so many books.
What does The Library mean for the community? The resources they have are awesome. I love going to the Kline Library book sales. All of the programming is great. A bunch of girls from our Girl Scouts troop signed up for Paws with a Cause to make toys for shelter dogs. Our troop utilizes the free Library space when we need a bigger venue. That’s really nice, just having that space for nonprofits that’s free and open to the public. That’s been really, really helpful, especially for our troop, because we don’t have lots of money. We’re using our resources wisely. We have to stretch that little bit of dollars that we have.
