Library Card Sign-Up Month in September reminds students and families a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available – IT’S FREE!
But, you don’t have to wait to sign up for a Library Card. Any time is a good time, especially with back to school a few weeks away.
Whether you use a library card online or in person, your card gives you the free tools to succeed in school and provides people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunities to pursue their dreams and be the best they can be. Libraries offer free and fun educational resources and activities that bring families and communities together. Libraries have moved far beyond just being book repositories. They’re agile institutions serving real-life needs.
With a library card, the possibilities are endless. Borrow free books, CDs, DVDs, and download eBooks, and e-Audiobooks right from the comfort of your own home! We even have a large selection of videogames available to check out.
Our Online resources are always available for use in the library and at home (accessible with your library card).
Whether you are in elementary, middle or high school, you can find age appropriate content covering a wide range of educational topics. The Patriot News has news articles on line from 8/1/1986 thru present. If the article has images (from 2018-present), you can get both the article and image. You have the option to print, send to email and it also provides information on how to cite the article.
EBSCO Host is another great resource for searching for articles. You can set parameters to search for full text articles, academic journal articles, etc. You have the option to print, send to email and it also provides the information to cite the article.
The Dauphin County Libraries offer a large selection of ebook reference material thru Gale Ebooks. You can find this source under Books, Music, Movies & More. There are 16 different collections with over 350 titles. Here you can find information ranging from Arts to Technology and many topics in between.
Researching the 1920’s- check out History and review American Decades and American Eras, and Primary Sources. Primary sources are documents, images or artifacts that provide firsthand testimony or direct evidence for the time under study. These could include, photographs, audio or video recordings, journals, letters, diaries, etc. A Primary Source may also be referred to as an original source.

To get a free Library card or update your account, go the customer service desk at one of our 8 Library branches. You will need to bring a form of ID and for a child, you must be the parent or legal guardian. If you are not able to come to The Library, you can register for a card on line- click on the link below to get started. You will receive a welcome new card email, which will prompt you to create a 4-digit PIN. Once you have created your PIN, you will be able to place up to 2 holds on books, borrow eContent and access our Online Resources. In order to borrow the physical material, you placed on hold you will need to bring your ID for verification to any of the Library’s customer service desks. By updating your account, you will be able to borrow additional materials and have access to the public computers at any of our Library branches. Remember, if this card is for a child, you must be the parent or legal guardian of the child to update the account.
