Update -
March 13, 2006
Governor Ed Rendell recently proposed restoring library funding in the amount of $75.5 million as part of the 2006/07 state budget. If the Governor’s proposal becomes law, library funding will be restored at slightly above the level it was prior to the massive cuts of 2003. This is good news for everyone who uses public libraries!
What You Can Do
The Pennsylvania Senate and House of Representatives must approve the new state budget, including the public library subsidy. Your help could be critical to seeing that the Governor’s recommendation is approved. Here’s how you can help in this process:
1. Thank Governor Rendell for proposing a $75.5 million state investment in public library services. Assure him these fund will be used wisely to advance the learning needs of children, to add vitality to struggling communities, to provide resources for small businesses, and to further the lifelong learning of all Pennsylvanians. Be brief, but tell the Governor what impact the public library has had in your life and community.
2. Call your State Senator and State Representative TODAY or drop them a personal note. Let them know how the $75.5 million state investment in public library service will positively affect you, your family and/or your community. Thank them for their support in prior years and urge them to support the $75.5 million recommendation.
3. Thank your Dauphin County Commissioners! Remember, the county’s investment in your public library service has been critical. Let your commissioners know how much you appreciate their attention to library service and what it means to you and your family.
4. Let us know what you think! Tell us what you think about the proposed budget and what the library means to you and your family. Questions? Check out the Budget FAQ or contact us.
Stay tuned—we will keep you updated on library funding issues on this website and through DCLS newsletters and other methods.
Thank you—it’s a pleasure to be your library.
