The East Shore Area Library has tools for people with visual impairments who need assistance reading print and electronic text. The equipment was provided to the library through a project of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University, called “Get REAL-Regional Education Assisting Life Long Learning” which is bringing magnification technologies to select libraries across Pennsylvania.

Devices Available & What They Do:

  • JAWS Computer: Reads information from a computer display and speaks it to you by way of a text-to-speech service
  • TOPAZ Reader: Video magnifier with a widescreen monitor. Also called a closed circuit television “CCTV”
  • RUBY Magnifier: Handheld video magnifier

The JAWS computer and TOPAZ Reader are located in the reference area near the adult public computers. The RUBY Magnifier is available at the Ask a Librarian desk.
