Introduction to Foundation Directory Online Professional

In this session, we will learn how to get started using Foundation Directory Online to find potential funders for your nonprofit. The Foundation Directory Online is a fee-based subscription service, available for free in many Foundation Center Cooperating Collections, including the Cooperating Collection located at the East Shore Area Library. The Search includes 4 databases – Search Grantmakers, Search Companies, Search Grants and Search 990’s. The Foundation Directory Online provides detailed information about more than 98,000 U.S. foundation and corporate
donors and 1.7 million grants.
We will learn the basics – and tips and tricks – for searching for varieties of funding for nonprofit grant-seeking.

How to Approach a Foundation: From Initial Contact to Getting Funded

Grant-seeking is part of a multi-faceted process that includes
planning, research, writing, and communicating with funders. In this session we will focus on that last aspect – communicating with donors and prospective donors in the interest of building a philanthropic partnership. This class is designed to help you initiate and build satisfying grantee / funder relationships. By the end of this session, you will be able to identify key stages in relationship development and plan activities accordingly.

Topics will include:

  • How to plan and conduct the initial approach to a foundation
  • Phone calls with grantmakers – how to prepare for them and what to say
  • Communication surrounding the submission of a proposal
  • The site visit
  • How to work with a foundation when your project is funded
  • What to do if the proposal is turned down
  • Resources for additional investigation into this topic
